The Golf Buddy Voice is the first golf gps on the market that will not only display the distances for you, but
will speak them to you also. While very similar in shape to the iPod Nano, the Golf Buddy Voice is the smallest
golf gps available. It is an amazing 1 oz. and only 1.7" x 1.7". As with all previous Golf Buddy GPSs, there are no
annual fees or future course update fees. Your new Voice will come preloaded with over 35,000 courses from around
the world. With the push of a button, the gps will speak the distances to the front, middle, and back of the green.
If you don't want the voice, then you can just view the distances on the screen. It will also show you a dynamic
green view, which means the shape and distances of the green will be calculated based on the angle at which you are
hitting in to the green. Different displays will show you the time, yardage, green view, GPS and battery status.
The unit will automatically recognize the course and hole that you are on. Use the shot distance feature to measure
the distance you hit each club in your bag. Where do I put it? - clip to your belt, shirt pocket, pants pocket,
clip to visor of cap, etc.
Preparing Your Golf Buddy Voice
After you unpack your unit (What's In the Box: GB Voice, Power Adapter, USB
cable, Silicon Case, Quick Start Guide) the first thing you need to do is get
it fully charged. Just use the power adapter and usb cable for that. Even though your new unit comes preloaded
with over 35,000 golf courses, with a new unit out of the box it can be a good idea to make sure the courses
and firmware software is up to date. For this, go to Golf Buddy and download the GolfBuddy Course Manager. It is available for both
Windows and Mac (Note the Mac version has different compatibility issues with different firmware versions).
After charging is complete you can use the Course Manager to update any new course additions and get your system
firmware current. If your pressed for time check the Available
Courses to make sure your course is on the unit. Now your ready to play.
Golf Buddy Voice on the Course
When you are ready to tee off then turn on the GB Voice so that it can locate and connect to the satellites. The
unit has automatic hole and course recognition. Your ready to play. A press of the button will display the yardage
to the center of the green and a voice will speak the distance. You will then be displayed the hole information
which includes the hole number, par information, green view, and left/right green(this is pertinent for holes with
double greens). After you hit your drive, press the shot measure button and proceed to your ball. Once at your
ball, press the button again and you will be displayed the distance for that shot. Jot this information down or
keep a mental note. Knowing the distances you hit each club combined with the accurate yardage numbers on the Golf
Buddy can greatly improve your scoring. When you press the button for the green view the shape of the green will
change depending on your angle of approach. Multiple presses of the button will prompt the unit to speak the front
and back distances to the green.
The Golf Buddy Voice is the only golf gps on the market that will speak the distances to you. It currently ships
with 8 languages. Along with the small footprint, this feature gives you great versatility in how you use it on the
course. You can clip it to your hat or belt and go totally hands free using only the audible yardages. The sound
will be loud enough that your playing partners will be able to hear it as well. You can adjust the volume up and
down or mute it. Before pushing the button make sure you are stationary so that the satellites can lock in on your
position. With the 1.7" square size you can easily keep it in your pants or shirt pocket for quick access.
What's In The Box
Golf Buddy Voice, Power Adapter, USB Cable, Silicon Case, Quick Start Guide
As we stand now, the Golf Buddy is the only golf gps with voice capabilities. But you do have similar units with
a wide range of price points. In the same price range you have 2 golf gps wrist watches - the Garmin Approach S1(See our side
by side comparison with the GB Voice), Bushnell Neo +
Watch, and the Expresso
WR62. These units are most similar in providing the basic yardages for the courses. The
Expresso will also offer yardages to hazards. The more advanced entries to this category (with higher price points
as well) are the Garmin
Approach S3 and the Motorola MOTOACTV
Golf GPS. These units keep the small footprint and provide additional features including
distances to hazards and layups, digital scorecards, touchscreen, manual pin positioning, and more.
While the Voice golf gps offers only a few basic functions, it does them quite well. You get yardages to
the front, middle, and back of green spoken to you, a visual of the green with distance to the middle, and shot
measure capabilities. As we first noted, it will do these functions extremely well with over 35,000 courses
preloaded into the 1.7" x 1.7" form. You will not incur any annual fees for future updates and course
additions. For many golfers this will provide all the yardage information needed to shoot lower
scores and play better golf.
